Wave dynamics are classified into two types based on oscillation frequency and phase: standing waves, or modulated waves, which are composed of both stationary and traveling wave components. To characterize these dynamics, we observe optical flow patterns, including sources, sinks, spirals, and saddles. Real EEG data from a picture-naming task provides a benchmark for evaluating the analytical and numerical solutions. Establishing the properties of standing wave pattern location and quantity is facilitated by analytical approximation. Principally, sources and sinks are situated in the same geographic area, whereas saddles are positioned in the intermediate region between them. A direct proportionality exists between the number of saddles and the overall sum of all the other patterns. These properties hold true across both simulated and real EEG data recordings. EEG data demonstrates a substantial overlap between source and sink clusters, with a median percentage of approximately 60%, hence high spatial correlation. In sharp contrast, source/sink clusters only exhibit less than 1% overlap with saddle clusters, illustrating distinct locations.
